“Take what you like and leave the rest” is wisdom regularly shared in 12 Step rooms – I’ll leave that thought with you here.
Self-help books abound and I encourage you to find authors who speak your language, writers with a story that mirrors your own. Below are a few tomes I return to time and time again.
Most are best described as “originals”. They are written by the pioneers in their space…to quote ancient advice: “the rest is just commentary”.
Financial Times reviewer Simon London said it best: “The biggest challenge for any management writer is to find something to say that management guru Peter Drucker has not already said better”.
A wise colleague cited the plethora of mediocre “short cut” quick fix self-help books that go in and out of fashion. “What I dislike is that the pioneers always cite the sources of their wisdom, the bible, ancient teaching, Confucius, the Buddha –these new experts never cite the wisdom that informed theirs.”
